CANTON, N.Y. (August 30, 2013) – Sophomore midfielder
Colin Phillips (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and freshman
Jay Mikula (Howell, N.J.) both scored a pair of goals to lead the No. 13 Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a 4-1 season-opening win at No. 20 St. Lawrence University on Friday afternoon.
Phillips notched his first two collegiate goals on assists from junior midfielder
Kevin Calloway (Sewell, N.J.) in the third minute and senior forward
Stephen Dunbar (Johns Creek, Ga.) in the fourth. Mikula then added his first collegiate goals via an assist from senior midfielder
Curtis Stecyk (Niwot, Colo.) in the 36
th minute and bagged the brace unassisted in the 89
th minute.
Stevens held the edge in production on both ends of the field, outshooting St. Lawrence, 13-10, while putting a better percentage of those chances on target (9-5) as well.
Stevens got out to a 1-0-0 record with the victory while St. Lawrence starts out at 0-1-0.
The Ducks took control early as Phillips headed in Calloway's cross to go up 1-0 and smashed in a cross from Dunbar on the next possession.
The Saints forced a save from senior goalkeeper
Paul Killian (Ellicott City, Md.) in the next minute and began to put some serious pressure on the Ducks defense soon after, cracking three more shots and earning a pair of corner kicks.
Stevens bounced back and got an insurance goal from Mikula in the 36
th minute as he broke away on a pass from Stecyk and dribbled around sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Roethel (Monroe, N.Y.) to slot it home for the 3-0 lead, which the Ducks carried into halftime.
Neither team could gain any momentum as the second half got underway, but the Saints scored on their first chance of the half as junior midfielder Mark Provost (Toronto, Ontario) cut the deficit to two in the 56
th minute.
Both teams had their chances as the second half wound down, but Stevens would come away with another strike as Mikula caught substitute junior goalkeeper Aaron Costello (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) well off his line with a deep shot from the right sideline in the 89
th minute.
Dunbar was a bit unlucky to score, as he put two of his three shots (tied-second on the team) on frame, while Killian notched four saves in net.
