Duck Wrestling Tabbed Second in Centennial Conference Preseason Poll

Complete Poll

LANCASTER, Pa. (October 30, 2014)
 – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team was picked second in the Centennial Conference Preseason Poll, it was announced Thursday morning by the league office.

Ursinus College – the 2014 champ – was picked first, receiving seven first-place votes and 63 points. The Ducks received one first-place vote and had 55 points as New York University (44 points), McDaniel College (39 points), Johns Hopkins University (38 points) and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (38 points) rounded out the top five. Gettysburg College, Washington & Lee University and Muhlenberg College were picked seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.

"We are looking forward to the start of the season and the start of a new era here at Stevens," Head Coach Joe Favia (Jersey City, N.J.) said. "The guys have been working hard to improve and buy into the culture and mentality being taught, and we are truly excited to have the opportunity to wrestle against some of the top programs in the country, both academically and athletically."

Last year, the Ducks placed second in the conference, tallying 65 points and winning two individual tournament titles as Ryan Dormann '14 took the 185-pound weight class and then-junior Chris Florek was a winner in the heavyweight division. In total, Stevens had four different grapplers compete in the final of their respective weight class.

The 2013-14 season saw the Ducks go 6-2 in bouts versus Centennial Conference foes and 11-8 overall, earning wins over No. 6 TCNJ and No. 24 NYU.  Despite falling to Ursinus and Johns Hopkins, Stevens wrestled well in the conference, winning its final three Centennial bouts by a score of 113-27.

Stevens opens its 2014-15 season at the Rutgers University Duals on Sunday, doing battle with Centenary College, Delaware Valley College and Rutgers at 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.,respectively.
