Men’s Basketball Falls to Stockton in Misericordia Tournament Opener

DALLAS, Pa. (November 22, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team fell to 1-2 on the season with a 73-49 loss to Richard Stockton Friday night in the opening game of the 23rd Annual McCarthy Tire Laurel Line Tournament hosted at Misericordia University.

The Ducks (1-2) were led by sophomore guard Patrick Barron and senior forward Patrick Sabatino who were each in double figures with 16 and 12 points, respectively.

After jumping out to an early 8-4 advantage thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Barron and a jumper from Sabatino, Stockton went on an 10-3 run to open a 14-11 edge 6:03 into the game. Another jumper from Barron and a triple from sophomore forward Otis Osman handed the lead back to the Ducks and a second three-pointer from Osman made it a 19-14 game with 11:09 left in the first half.

Stockton countered the Ducks' spurt with seven-straight to go on top 21-19, eventually taking control of the game, and going into the locker room on top 37-24. The Ospreys (4-0) outscored Stevens 22-5 over the final 9:46 of the opening stanza.

Stevens was able to hang tough in the opening moments of the second, but an 11-point deficit (37-26) turned into a 21-point Stockton lead at 51-30 with 11:18 on the clock, essentially sealing the win.

Junior guard Armin Cane led Stockton with 27 points on 18 shots as the Ospreys shot 40.6 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from three and 9-for-11 at the line. They held a 34-31 margin on the glass and scored 23 points off turnovers and tallied 20 points in the paint.

Stevens received 16 points on just eight attempts from the field from Barron as the Ducks shot 20-for-42 (47.6 percent) from the floor and 7-for-14 from deep. Stevens only went to the line for five total free throws (2-for-5) and committed 22 turnovers compared to dishing out 12 assists. Sabatino finished with 12 points, six rebounds, four blocks and a pair of assists, while Osman had eight points and five rebounds. Senior forward Kenny Gan notched a game-high 10 rebounds and team-high four assists for the Ducks to go along with a steal, two blocks and two points.
