NEW YORK, N.Y. (December 6, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team dropped a 67-47 game at New York University Saturday afternoon.
NYU improves to 4-2 with the win, while the Ducks fall to 3-5 and end the 2014 portion of their 2014-15 schedule.
Jockeying for an early lead, NYU jumped on top 15-7, eventually doubling up the Ducks at 18-9 with 9:39 left in the first half. Sophomore guard
Thomas Ahern pushed the Ducks into double figures moments later, and on the next position, an Ahern triple thanks to a helper from junior guard
Kevin Zychowski had the Ducks within four points. A stop and layup from freshman guard
Chris Cosgrove at 8:28 made it an 18-16 contest, with a Zychowski three-pointer making it 20-19 32 seconds later.
The Violets cooled the Ducks and extended the margin to eight points late in the first (30-22), but a three-pointer from Zychowski pulled Stevens within five and the two teams went into the locker room with the scoreboard showing NYU 32, Stevens 25. Zychowski led the Ducks with three three-pointers on six attempts in the opening 20 minutes.
NYU began the second half with a 10-0 run over a span of 4:26 to take a 42-25 lead. The Ducks battled back with an 8-2 spurt to get within 11 points at 13:04 following a jumper from sophomore forward
Otis Osman, but the hosts responded with an 8-0 run of their own to go back up 19 and essentially sealed the win with less than 10 minutes to play.
Stevens battled, getting within 14 points after a pair at the line from senior forward
Patrick Sabatino but it was too little too late as the Ducks fell to 3-5 on the season.
Zychowski led the Ducks with nine points and two assists, with Osman notching eight tallies and four rebounds. Sabatino had six points and two boards, with senior forward
Kenny Gan scoring five points, grabbing six rebounds and record a trio of steals and assists in a strong all-around performance for the co-captain.
Stevens finished the game shooting 29.8 percent from the field and hit six of its 27 attempts from deep. The Ducks shot 70 percent from the line (7-for-10), and were out-rebounded 48-25. The Ducks tallied 13 steals as a team and received 29 of their 47 points off the bench.
NYU shot 48.1 percent from the floor (48.1 percent) and 65.2 percent at the line (15-for-23). Junior forward Evan Kupferberg, junior center Costas Gontikas and sophomore forward Alec Papesch were all in double figures for the Violets with Papesch's 19 leading all scorers.
Next up for Stevens are finals, followed by winter recess. The Ducks will return to the hardwood when they open Empire 8 play on January 2 and 3 in the Canavan Arena. Stevens will host Alfred University on the second and Houghton College on the third. All the action can be seen live at
