TOWSON, Md. (March 15, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team wound up on the wrong end of a 19-17 shootout with No. 8 Denison University in a non-conference contest on Saturday in Towson, Md. at Hargaden Field.
Stevens (1-5) jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Denison (5-0) in the opening 6:17 of the game, but the Big Red ran off seven of the next nine goals in the quarter to take a 7-5 edge after one period of play. Denison built its advantage to 10-5 after 4:16 ticked off the clock in the second period before the Ducks tallied the final two goals (6:43 of game time) and went into halftime down, 10-7.
The Ducks netted the first goal of the second half just 35 seconds into the frame to get back to within two scores, 10-8. After the teams traded scores in a 39-second span, Denison went back up by four, 13-9, in less than a minute. Stevens climbed back to a two-goal difference, 14-12, as the third stanza came to a close.
Denison once again went back by four, 16-12, over a 2:42 span of the final quarter. Stevens held the Big Red scoreless for over 10 minutes and regained control of the scoreboard at 17-16 with just over three minutes left in regulation. After another 1:16 burned off the clock, Denison knotted the contest at 17-17 at the 1:50 mark. The Big Red took the ensuing face-off and found the back of the net just 11 seconds later and secured their win with another goal with 22 seconds to go in regulation.
After Stevens went up, 17-16, the Ducks were unable to win any of the final four face-offs in showdown and took zero shots.
The Ducks were outshot in the game, 49-41, but won 21 of 40 face-offs. Stevens also lost the groundball battle, 56-49, and committed 19 turnovers to 15 for Denison. The Ducks were 12-for-17 on clears, but the Big Red was nearly perfect in the same category, 17-for-18.

Charlie Cronin (Northampton, Mass.) and junior
Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.) each recorded six points for Stevens. Cronin led the way with six goals (three in each half) on 10 shots, while Maroon dished out five assists with a goal and five groundballs. Sophomore
Matt Ferentini (South Salem, N.Y.) tallied five points on three goals and two assists, while classmate
Michael Serrante (Bridgewater, N.J.) posted four scores and an assist. Sophomore
Anthony Raposo (Tewksbury, N.J.) assisted on three goals and fellow sophomore
Andrew Scrutchfield (Lewes, Del.) netted two goals to go along with six groundballs. Freshman
Connor Towne (San Jose, Calif.) accounted for Stevens' final two points with a goal and assist.
Sophomore
Brett Incollingo (Yardley, Pa.) went 14-for-27 at the face-off "X" with a team-high 10 groundballs and sophomore
Jeff Wyckoff (Summit, N.J.) won 7-of-13 tries.
Freshman
Kevin Rafferty (Bay Shore, N.Y.) took the loss in cage for the Ducks and made 13 saves in 60 minutes of action.
Denison was led by nine goals from Eddie Vita, five points by Teddy Powell, and four points a piece from Justin DeMarchi and Luke Walsh.
Stevens will look to right the ship on March 19 at No. 14 Montclair State University at 7 p.m. The Ducks have won each of the past five meetings in the rivalry and 11 of the last 12 dating back to 2003 by a combined score of 178-95.
