Men’s Lacrosse Evens Record at 5-5 with 19-9 Rout at Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. (April 2, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team leveled its record to 5-5 on the season with a 19-9 Empire 8 Conference victory at Hartwick College on Wednesday afternoon. Stevens has now won four straight games and has claimed each contest by an average of seven goals.

The Ducks jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a man-up goal from senior Charlie Cronin (Northampton, Mass.) just 1:15 into the game off a pass from junior Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va). Hartwick then evened the game at 1-1 a minute later before sophomore Michael Serrante (Bridgewater, N.J.) received a pass from Cronin 24 seconds after to put Stevens back up, 2-1.

Hartwick answered with another first quarter goal at the 9:46 mark only to watch Stevens score again on Cronin's second tally with 8:11 to go in the period. Sophomore Andrew Scrutchfield (Lewes, Del.) closed out the first with 53 seconds left off Maroon's second assist.

Stevens ran off three straight scores in the second quarter to take a 7-2 edge over the first four minutes. Maroon got things started just 41 seconds into the stanza on an assist from Scrutchfield and then sophomore Matt Ferentini (South Salem, N.Y.) found the back of the net 28 seconds later. Cronin reached a hat trick at the 11:01 mark of the period to put the Ducks ahead by four scores, which was assisted by senior Sean Scrudato (Westfield, N.J.).

The Hawks erased their deficit with a three-goal string in a 1:25 span on a pair of man-up scores. Maroon ended the Hartwick streak and put Stevens back up by three with 4:42 remaining in the half on another assist from Cronin. Sophomore Troy Gassaway (Severna Park, Md.) then found Cronin at the four-minute mark to put the Ducks back up, 9-5. Serrante hooked up with Maroon for the final goal of the half with 2:42 left on the clock to send Stevens into the break with a 10-5 lead.

Ferentini and Cronin netted back-to-back goals in the third to give the Ducks their largest lead of the contest, 12-5, midway through the third quarter on two unassisted scores before Hartwick could score again with 6:57 left on the clock. Stevens went back up by seven on Maroon's fourth goal and second assist from Scrudato at the 6:15 mark. After Hartwick turned the scoreboard to a 13-7 difference with just over five minutes to go in the third, Scrudato found Serrante to wrap up the scoring in the period with 2:14 left.

Hartwick tallied the opening goal of the final quarter, but the Ducks would score the next five goals to turn a 14-8 game into a 19-8 blowout in a seven-minute stretch. Scrutchfield and sophomore Colin Sawula (Northampton, Mass.) recorded unassisted scores and then Maroon capped off his afternoon with a man-up goal with 11:03 to go in the contest. Ferentini picked up his hat trick at the 9:16 mark and senior Connor Lynch (Seaford, N.Y.) registered Stevens' final goal of the game off a pass from freshman Nick Hammell (Columbus, N.J.) with just over five minutes left. Hartwick concluded the offense in the final minute of play to account for the 19-9 outcome.

Cronin and Maroon each registered seven points on five goals and two assists to lead Stevens. Scrutchfield added a pair of goals and assists, while Ferentini, Scrudato and Serrante chipped in three points. Gassaway, Hammell, Lynch and Sawula picked up a point apiece in the win.

Sophomore Jeff Wyckoff (Summit, N.J.) won 10-of-13 faceoffs and picked up three groundballs. Classmate Brett Incollingo (Yardley, Pa.) succeeded on 8-of-16 attempts with three groundballs as Stevens claimed 18-of-30 tries at the "X".

Senior Tim Culloty (Mahwah, N.J.) and Scrutchfield each led Stevens with five groundballs, while Culloty forced four turnovers.

The Ducks dominated in groundballs, 49-30, and shots, 60-25, with at least 12 shots in each quarter.

Freshman Kevin Rafferty (Bay Shore, N.Y.) won his fifth game of the season with eight saves in 52:52 minutes between the pipes. Fellow freshman Anthony Setola (Riverdale, N.J.) stopped one shot in 7:08 of action.

Stevens remains on the road against St. John Fisher College on April 5 at 1 p.m. for its next game.
