Wrestling Sets Program Record For Consecutive Wins

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 27, 2016) - The No. 19 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team (14-2, 2-0) won a program record 10th consecutive dual match Wednesday night in a 28-13 win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

The Ducks surpassed the total set during both the 1979-80, and 2011-12 seasons, and also tied the program record for wins in a season. The loss dropped Merchant Marine to 6-7 (1-2).

A forfeit at 125 gave the Ducks the early advantage, but Merchant Marine answered with wins by decision and pin at 133 and 141 respectively. Sophomore Zach Wilhelm provided the equalizer however at 149, topping Merchant Marine's Nathan Twito in a hard-fought, 5-3 decision win to tie the score at nine.

The win was Wilhelm's 11th of the season in duals, and 30th overall on the season.

Senior Victor Del Monico made it two-straight with a 9-4 win at 157, before junior Colin Navickas, ranked No. 7 nationally, extended the lead to 15-9 with a 9-3 decision win at 165. The win was Navickas' team-leading 35th of the season, and extended his dual match win-streak to 15.

Sophomore Phil Woods' 6-2 decision win at 174 made it 18-9, before No. 8 sophomore A.J. Kowal picked-up the pin in 36 seconds at 184 to make it 24-9. The pin was Kowal's seventh in-a-row, and extended his team and national-lead to 14.

No. 7 Ricky Fisher got Merchant Marine back on the board with a major decision win at 197, however it's all it would get the rest of the night as senior Tyler Maher capped the Stevens win with a 12-2 major at 285.

The Ducks will return to the mats Saturday with two Centennial Conference matchups against Gettysburg College and Johns Hopkins University starting at noon in Gettysburg.
