No. 7 Wrestling Continues To Roll With Win Over Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (January 12, 2017) – In a match that saw six of the 10 weight classes decided by decision, the No. 7 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team kicked off its Iowa trip Thursday night with a 21-16 win over No. 16 Cornell.

The win keeps Stevens undefeated this season at 14-0, and extends its program-record dual match win streak to 28. Cornell fell to 6-5 with the loss. The win was the fourth of the season for the Ducks against opponents ranked in the NWCA top-25 at the time of the match.

With the match starting at 149, junior No. 7 Zach Wilhelm downed Leonard Bloom 4-1, but Cornell responded with a win by Nic Jarvis at 157 to deadlock the match. The win was the 26th of the season for Wilhelm to give him the second most on the team.

Both sides traded decisions again at 165 and 174 in a win for senior No. 8 Colin Navickas, but senior Danny Moore and junior No. 8 A.J. Kowal put Stevens in front with a pair of decision wins at 184 and 197 respectively.

Cornell picked up the first major of the match at 285, before Stevens sealed the win with senior Rob Murray's 14-2 major at 125, followed by freshman No. 1 Troy Stanich's 17-2 technical fall win at 133. No. 5 Josh Martin captured the fall for Cornell at 141, but the lead was enough for Stevens to pick up the win.

The technical fall was Stanich's second of the season as the rookie remained unbeaten to start his collegiate career.

Stevens will be off from competition tomorrow before returning to the mats Saturday for the Cornell Matman Invitational.
