Andrea Chimel was hired as an assistant coach with the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s fencing team during the fall of 2006. Chimel specializes in the epee.
As a member of the Ducks from 2001-05, Chimel developed into the most accomplished epee fencer in the history of the program. During her career, she amassed an impressive record of 166-26. Chimel’s 166 wins rank first all-time in the epee at Stevens. In addition, her 0.865 win-percentage is the highest ever. Chimel also owns the school’s single-season record for win-percentage as she went 41-3 (0.931) in 2003-04.
As a freshman in 2001-02, Chimel was named an Eastern Women’s Fencing Conference first-team all-star as she posted a 48-9 record and helped lead the Ducks to the conference championship. She was also crowned the epee champion at the Stevens Invitational that year. In 2002-03, Chimel went 38-9 and was selected to the All-EWFC second-team. During that season, she was named a second-team all-star by the National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association.
As a junior and senior, Chimel garnered first-team honors from both the EWFC and NIWFA. In 2003-04, she earned her second Stevens Invitational championship. As a senior captain in 2004-05, Chimel was named to the NIWFA All-Academic Team, received EWFC Epee Fencer of the Year honors and was selected as the NCAA Woman of the Year from Stevens. A four-time NCAA qualifier, Chimel reached the regional finals during her junior and senior seasons.
Chimel graduated from Stevens in 2005 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Chemical Engineering. She owns a Level-1 epee coaching certification from the United States Fencing Association Coaches College. Chimel currently works as an electropolishing chemical engineer at Burpee Materials Technology in Eatontown, N.J.
