Paul Hughes is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s and women’s swimming programs.   

Hughes has led the Stevens men’s team three conference team titles (Empire 2018-19) (Middle Atlantic Conference 2019-20, 2020-21) team titles. Additionally, Hughes guided the women's program to the MAC crown in 2019-20. In his first season in the MAC, the Ducks broke the conference meet record for points in a conference meet and captured 15 total conference event titles.

Hughes also coached Tyler Zanki to an 18th place finish in the 200 Breast at the NCAA DIII Championship in 2018-19.

Paul HC

  • Coached the Ducks men's program to the MAC Championship for the ninth straight year in 2020-21
  • Broke the MAC meet record for points on both the women's and men's side to sweep the titles in 2019-20
  • Led the men’s team to their seventh straight Empire 8 Championship including 15 total first place finishes in 2018-19  
  • Took the Ducks women to a total of five first place finishes for a second-place team finish 2019 E8 Championship 
  • Helped Tyler Zanki become the Empire 8 Swimmer of the Year and earn an 18th place finish in the 200 Breast at the NCAA Championships in 2019  
  • Was named Empire 8 Men’s Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year in 2018-19 

CalTech HC

  • In two seasons with the Beavers, Hughes coached a total of three SCIAC individual champions and 14 All-SCIAC performers  
  • Helped three of his four total teams at Caltech earn CSCAA Scholar All-America team honors  
  • Coached Thomas Gallup who became a two-time Honorable Mention All-American in 2016 and 2017  
  • Produced three CSCAA Scholar All-Americans as well as a CoSIDA Academic All-American  

Puget Sound Student-Athlete

  • Was a two-year captain in his junior and senior seasons  
  • Left the program as Puget Sound’s school record-holder in the 200 Free, 200 Medley and 400 Medley Relays 
  • Earned All-America honors as a member of the 200 Medley Relay and in the 100 Breast as a senior   
  • Also served as an assistant coach after his swimming career

  • Served as an assistant coach at Tufts University and Kalamazoo College prior to becoming the head coach at Caltech  
  • Helped Tufts men’s team earn a 12th place finish in the 2015 NCAA Championship
