Jessica Reed is entering her fifth season leading the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey program. She has taken a program that began with just one win in its’ first season to 24 in the previous two.
Last season, Stevens had their best season to date, going 13-7 and earning the first postseason victory in the history of the program over Washington and Jefferson at the ECAC Tournament. Reed’s Ducks also received the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Academic Team Award for the fourth straight season, and 11 different players were named to the NFHCA All-Academic team. The goalie of the 2008 squad, Stephanie Smith, was the first-ever Duck to garner All-America honors, and Smith and teammate Hillary Paul were the first two Stevens players to earn All-Region honors. Six members of the ’07 team also received honors from the Empire 8. There were three first-team selections, two-second team selections, and Lauren Griggs was named the Rookie of the Year.
In 2006, Reed led the Ducks to an 11-8 record and was named the Empire 8 Coach of the Year. The Ducks opened the season victorious in six of their first seven games. They also posted wins against 2006 Empire 8 Co-Champions, Ithaca College and Utica College. She also helped produce six all-conference selections, and Courtney Geddis was named the Empire 8 Rookie of the Year.
In 2005, Stevens posted a 10-7 record, in which it avenged six losses from the previous year against Eastern Connecticut State University, Castleton State University, Ramapo College, The College of Notre Dame (Md.), Moravian College, and William Paterson University.
In her four previous seasons, the Ducks have increased their win totals in each one, and have an overall mark of 34-22 over the last three. In two seasons since joining the Empire 8, Reed has coached four President’s List athletes, four second-team all-conference members, and four first-team all-conference members. Reed has also coached 39 different NFHCA All-Academic student-athletes.
Prior to Stevens, Reed was a four-year starter at American University where she helped the Lady Eagles to a No. 12 national ranking. She was also a four-time member of the NHFCA Division I Academic Squad and a Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete.
After graduation, Reed went overseas to play field hockey in London, where she was a member of the England Hockey League’s Old Loughtonians during the 2000-01 season.
Upon returning to the United States, Reed spent one year as an assistant coach at Georgetown University before joining the staff at Drexel University. During her time at Drexel, Reed helped the Lady Dragons to an 11-win season as well as a berth in the ECAC Tournament.
On the sidelines, Reed serves as an Under-16 Futures coach for the U.S. Field Hockey Association Olympic Development program. She has also been invited to coach at the National Futures Tournament, the Junior Olympics, Regional Rumble, and the USFHA High School Open Camp. Moreover, Reed is the director of the New Jersey Field Hockey Garden State Games, which were hosted by the Stevens Institute of Technology in 2005, 2006, and 2008. Lastly, Reed holds a certificate from the first International Hockey Federation Field Hockey course held in the United States.
Reed received a B.A. degree in Journalism from American University in 2000. She also received her Master’s degree in Communications from Drexel University in 2004.
