GRANTHAM, Pa. – The College of New Jersey built a two-goal load and held off a late charge by Stevens Institute of Technology to earn a 2-1 win in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship on Friday at Messiah College.

The College of New Jersey (17-0-2) advances to the third round where it will meet the winner for Friday’s second game between host Messiah College and Mary Washington College.  Stevens, making its first trip to the NCAA Tournament, finishes its season at 13-7-1.  The Ducks earned a 1-0 win over Johns Hopkins on Wednesday in their first-ever NCAA game.

The College of New Jersey scored once in each half.  Lynda Schuster collected a loose ball at the top of the Stevens penalty area and fired a shot to the upper right corner from 18 yards at the 16:08 mark to give the Lions a 1-0 lead that they carried into halftime.

Just 2:01 into the second half, Alison Baker sent a cross from the right corner into the penalty area where Gia Rosamilia volleyed a shot from six yards into the right side of the net, giving the College of New Jersey a 2-0 lead.

Stevens gained momentum over the final 20 minutes.  After a foul in the College of New Jersey end, senior Melissa Shankweiler (Catasauqua, Pa./Catasauqua) lofted a free kick from 25 yards that hit the Lions’ crossbar.  Junior Elaine Magallon (Jersey City, N.J./St. Dominic Academy) was in position for the rebound, heading a shot by goalkeeper Jackie Kemp and into the upper right corner at 76:48 to pull the Ducks within 2-1.

Stevens was unable to score the equalizer over the final 13 minutes.  The College of New Jersey held a 27-3 advantage in shots, but only 9-2 in the second half.  Junior goalkeeper Rommy Guevara (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) turned in a strong game in net for Stevens, recording a season-high 15 saves.
