PATCHOGUE, NY – Sophomore Rebecca Quinn (Damascus, MD/Damascus) headed in a free kick from sophomore Kim Mirra (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) in the 15th minute to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 1-0 win over St. Joseph’s-Patchogue on Wednesday in a Skyline Conference women’s soccer game at the Sachem Soccer Complex.
With the win, Stevens (11-6-1/4-0 Skyline) captured a third straight Skyline Conference championship. The conference does not hold a postseason tournament. Stevens improved to 12-0 in three years of Skyline play. St. Joseph’s-Patchogue concludes its season at 10-6-1 overall and 2-2 in the league.
“Winning the Skyline Conference title was one of our goals entering the season,” said third-year head coach Jeff Parker. “We’re happy for our seniors. This is the second straight class that will graduate knowing nothing but conference titles.”
Stevens also won four straight Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) titles prior to leaving the league at the conclusion of the 2001 season.
The Ducks scored the only goal of the game at the 14:45 mark. Mirra sent a free kick from 35 yards into the penalty area to Quinn who headed a shot from 10 yards into the right side of the net for her eighth goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Rommy Guevara (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) stopped four shots to earn the shutout in net for Stevens. The Ducks held a statistical edge, outshooting St. Joseph’s 13-6 with a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Stevens closes out its regular season on Saturday, November 9, with a 1 p.m. game against Centenary College at DeBaun Field.
