HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) scored in the first half and assisted on a goal by sophomore forward Jaime Mehnert (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) in the second half as Stevens Institute of Technology earned a 2-0 win over Kean University on Saturday in a women’s soccer game at DeBaun Field.
Stevens (7-6) jumped ahead at the 14:45 mark. Barnhart, who has scored in six straight games, took a pass from junior Rebecca Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus), turned and lofted a shot from 30 yards that sailed over Kean goalkeeper Jessica Kogel and into the upper right corner of the net.
The Ducks, who held an 11-1 advantage in shots in the first half, had an opportunity to add to their lead at the end of the half. Barnhart had a shot deflect off the crossbar with 20 seconds left and then was denied by Kogel from close range just seconds later.
Stevens clung to a one-goal lead for much of the second half. The Ducks added an insurance goal when Barnhart threaded a pass through the Kean defense to Mehnert who scored on a drive to the right side of the net at 80:09.
Stevens held a 17-4 advantage in shots for the game and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Kogel played well in net for Kean, stopping eight shots. Senior goalkeeper Rommy Guevara (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) made three saves in earning the shutout for Stevens.
The Ducks return to action on Wednesday, October 15, when they host Farmingdale State in a 4 p.m. Skyline Conference game at DeBaun Field.
