HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior forward Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and sophomore forward Jaime Mehnert (Waldwick, N.J./Waldwick) scored first-half goals as Stevens Institute of Technology earned a 2-0 win over Farmingdale State on Wednesday in a Skyline Conference women’s soccer game at DeBaun Field.
Stevens won its second straight, improving to 8-6 overall and 3-0 in Skyline play. Farmingdale State is 5-6-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference.
Stevens dominated the game statistically with a 33-2 advantage in shots, but the Ducks were only able to score a pair of first-half goals. Freshman back Kiley Rode (Montgomery, N.Y./Valley Central) sent a long ball from the right wing into the penalty area. Barnhart controlled the ball and beat goalkeeper Annmarie Fenza from close range for her 15th goal of the season. She has scored in seven straight games.
The Ducks extended their lead to two goals when Mehnert finished off a pass from junior Rebecca Quinn at the 38:52 mark. It was Mehnert’s fifth goal of the season.
Fenza had a big game in goal with 13 saves for Farmingdale. Senior Rommy Guevara (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and freshman Erica Midttveit (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) each played a half, combining for the shutout for Stevens. Midttveit denied Farmingdale’s Amanda Chiusano on a breakaway in the second half.
Stevens is back in action on Friday, October 17, with a 4 p.m. Skyline game at Mount St. Vincent.
