HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior forward Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) had a goal and an assist to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 2-0 win over Montclair State University on Wednesday in a women’s soccer match at DeBaun Field.
Stevens (9-6) scored once in each half. The Ducks have won five of their last six games. Montclair State, ranked fourth in the latest NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region coaches poll, falls to 11-4.
Midway through the first half, Stevens junior Kim Mirra (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) sent a free kick from the right sideline into the penalty box. Barnhart gathered in the pass and tapped a shot into the lower left corner from six yards at 28:02. The goal extended her scoring streak to eight consecutive games and gave her 16 goals in 15 games this season.
The Ducks tacked on another goal in the closing seconds. Barnhart crossed a ball from the right wing to junior Rebecca Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) who scored from close range with one second remaining.
Montclair State (11-4) controlled play for much of the first half and maintained an 11-3 advantage in shots in the opening half. Stevens held a 5-4 edge in shots in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper Rommy Guevara (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) made eight saves in the first half for Stevens. Freshman Erica Midttveit (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) played the second half and did not make a save. Susan Hinds made three stops for Montclair State.
Stevens is back in action on Saturday, October 25, with a Skyline Conference game at Manhattanville beginning at 2 p.m.
