Lorrie Brabender's first goal of the season was the game winner against Widener. |
HOBOKEN, N.J. – Sophomore Lorrie Brabender (Newark, Del./Padua Academy) scored in the first half and junior Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) added a second-half goal to lead Stevens Institute of Technology to a 2-0 win over Widener University on Saturday in a non-conference women’s soccer game at DeBaun Field.
Stevens, which earned back-to-back wins for the first time this season, improves to 6-5. Widener falls to 4-6.
Stevens took the lead in the 18th minute. Following a Widener foul 35 yards from the goal on the right wing, junior Kim Mirra (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) lofted a free kick into the penalty area. Brabender gained control of the loose ball and sent a shot from eight yards into the upper left corner of the net at the 17:26 mark. It was her first goal of the season.
The Ducks added an insurance goal midway through the second half. Barnhart picked up a Stevens clearing pass on the right wing near midfield and raced toward the Widener goal. She eluded a Pioneer defender and scored on a shot from 16 yards to the lower right corner at 69:53.
Stevens held a 14-4 advantage in shots, including 7-0 in the first half. Widener successfully employed an offside trap, drawing Stevens offside 10 times. Stevens senior goalkeeper Rommy Guevara (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) stopped two shots to earn the shutout. Kelli Quinn made three saves for Widener.
Stevens is back in action on Wednesday, October 8, with a 6 p.m. game at Richard Stockton College.
