Valerie Barnhart recorded seven points against Chowan in the season opener.

NORTON, Mass. – Junior Valerie Barnhart (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) scored three goals with one assist and freshman Heather Dean (Renton, Wash./Charles A. Lindbergh) added one goal and three assists to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s soccer team to a 6-0 win over Chowan (N.C.) College in the second game of the Adidas Kick-Off Classic on Friday at Wheaton's Mirrione Stadium.

Stevens will face host Wheaton on Saturday at 10 a.m. for the championship.  Wheaton, ranked fourth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III poll, earned a 5-0 win over Endicott in the first game.

Despite the six-goal margin, Stevens and Chowan were scoreless through the first 29 minutes of play.  Barnhart and Dean, who teamed up on four of the six goals, broke the stalemate at the 29:45 mark as Dean found Barnhart for the Ducks' initial goal.  Just three minutes before intermission, Dean scored her first collegiate goal off an assist from Barnhart, giving Stevens a 2-0 edge.

The Ducks put the game out of reach midway through the second half with three goals in a span of 12 minutes.  Junior Milia George (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) scored two minutes into the second half off an assist from sophomore Lorrie Brabender (Newark, Del./Padua Academy).  Junior Rebecca Quinn (Damascus, Md./Damascus) extended the Duck lead to 4-0 with an unassisted goal in the 75th minute, followed by two quick strikes from Barnhart at 82:00 and 85:15, both of which were assisted by Dean.

Freshman goalkeeper Erica Midttveit (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) collected her first collegiate shutout with three saves for Stevens, while Chowan sophomore goalie Emily Warthan made 16 saves.  The Ducks outshot the Braves, 34-6 with an 8-2 edge in corner kicks
