HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team defeated Elizabethtown College, 35-15, in its first home meet in more than 12 years. Junior Ian Gorham (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) and freshmen Michael Detsis (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) and Brandon MacWhinnie (Barton, N.Y./Tioga Central) improved to 4-0 in dual matches with wins at 125, 141 and 157. The Ducks won their last three matches at 184, 197 and HWT to secure the victory.
Stevens, which revived its wrestling program after dropping the sport in 1992, improves to 3-1, while Elizabethtown falls to 0-5. The match was also the home opener for the Ducks who last hosted a wrestling match on campus on January 21, 1992.
The Ducks jumped out to a 4-0 lead with Gorham winning a major decision at 125 pounds. Elizabethtown answered back with a win at 133, but Stevens regained the lead with Detsis winning a 5-1 decision at 141 pounds. The Ducks dropped the next match at 149 pounds, but MacWhinnie won by fall at 157 with one second left in the third period and Ryan Bennick (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe Senior) won a 11-1 major decision at 165 to give Stevens a 17-12 lead. Although the Ducks dropped a close match at 174 they answered back with three straight wins to earn their third win of the season. Sophomore Will Young (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro) won by fall at 184 pounds and senior Justin Bain (Avenel, N.J./Woodbridge) and freshman David D’Amato (Glen Rock, N.J./Glenrock) won by forfeit.
The Ducks return to action on Sunday, December 5 when they travel to the Scranton Invitational for a 9 a.m start.
