Favia and MacWhinnie Lead Ducks as Wrestling Hosts Conference Quad Meet

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 28, 2006) - The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team hosted Ursinus College, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and Muhlenberg College of the Centennial Conference on Saturday afternoon at the Canavan Arena.  The Ducks tied Kings Point 25-25, but dropped decisions to Muhlenberg, 24-20, and Ursinus, 31-15.  Stevens moves to 5-8-3 overall and 0-4-1 in the league. 

In the first match of the day against Muhlenberg, senior Ian Gorham (Old Bridge, N.J.) picked up the Ducks’ first win at 125 pounds over Michael Tenenhaus.  Freshman Charles Favia (Brick, N.J.) and sophomore Brandon MacWhinnie (Barton, N.Y.) each turned in wins at 149 and 165 pounds respectively to tie the score 14-14.  After dropping the 174-pound match, freshman Pasquale Perrone (Nanuet, N.Y.) defeated Matt Horn, 7-4, at 184 pounds to bring Stevens within one.  Forced to forfeit at 197 pounds, Stevens junior Will Young (Willingboro, N.J.) earned a 9-3 win at heavyweight, but the Ducks dropped a close 24-20 decision to the Mules.   

After dropping the first two matches to Ursinus, Stevens earned wins by freshman Pat Conrad (Enola, Pa.), Favia, sophomore Ryan Bennick (Jim Thorpe, Pa.) and MacWhinnie to take a 15-13 advantage.  However, the Ducks dropped the last four matches to the Bears to pick up their second loss of the day. 

Stevens opened up a comfortable 10-0 lead over Kings Point after Gorham earned a win by fall and freshman Mark Bistis (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) earned his first win of the day by a 9-1 major decision.  After dropping the match at 141 pounds, Favia, Bennick and MacWhinnie picked up wins to put Stevens on top, 25-6.  Perrone was defeated in overtime at 184 pounds and the Ducks forfeited at 197, which closed their lead to 25-21. Young was defeated 12-4 at heavyweight, ending the match in a 25-25 tie.

Favia and MacWhinnie each went 3-0 on the day improving their league records to 5-0.

Stevens is back in action on Saturday, February 11 when it travels to Kings Point, N.Y. to face the Merchant Marine, Gettysburg College and Johns Hopkins University.  The meet will begin at 4 p.m.
