HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 8, 2006) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team won five dual matches en route to a 18-16 victory over Elizabethtown College on Friday night in Hoboken, N.J. With the win, the Ducks improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Blue Jays dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
After dropping the first match of the night, Stevens won the next three matches to jump out to a 10-4 lead. Sophomore Mark Bistis (Readington, N.J.) recorded a 4-2 victory over Eric Rhoads (Manheim, Pa.) at 133 pounds. At the 141 class, sophomore Pat Conrad (Enola, Pa.) picked up a 10-1 major decision over Drew Winegar (Chatsworth, N.J.). Freshman Leo Dormann (Mickleton, N.J.) extended the Stevens lead with an 8-4 decision over Rob Bozart (Camp Hill, Pa.) at 149 pounds.
After the Ducks dropped their 157-pound match, junior Brandon MacWhinnie (Barton, N.Y.) collected a 16-0 victory over Keith Staulters (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) to give Stevens a 15-7 advantage over Elizabethtown. Brett Epps (Perth Amboy, N.J.) earned a win for the Blue Jays at 174 pounds to chip away at the Ducks’ lead. However, freshman Ernie Guaimano (Hillsborough, N.J.) came from behind in the third period to defeat Josh Herbert (Middletown, Ohio) by a close 4-3 decision. Despite dropping close matches at 197 pounds and the heavyweight, Stevens was able to hold onto the win.
This concludes the fall semester for Stevens. The Ducks will return to action on Thursday, January 4 when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to compete in the John Reese Duals. The tournament will begin at 11 a.m.
