HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 15, 2007) – Eight players tallied at least one point as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team opened Empire 8 play with a 6-0 victory over Alfred University on Saturday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. With the win, the Ducks improved to 4-1-1 on the season. The Saxons dropped to 0-5-1 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Sophomore midfielder/forward Leslie Kallberg opened the scoring in the 11th minute as she collected her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Just over eight minutes later, freshman midfielder Erica Risch tallied her first collegiate goal on a shot from 20 yards out near the top right corner of the box.
Stevens put the game away with a three-goal spurt in the span of 3:13 later in the half. Senior midfielder Siena York-Carr connected first as she scored on a header off a corner kick by Risch. Shortly thereafter, senior back/forward Sara Roeder found the back of the net on a left-footed shot off a pass from sophomore midfielder Alicia Vandersluis. Less than two minutes later, Vandersluis scored her first goal of the year on a header from inside the box.
Freshman midfielder Mary Chew capped off the scoring with her second goal of the season in the 71st minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Sherri Rosenberg played the first half and only faced three shots. Freshman Jenn Pontier took over in the second half and made two saves to preserve the shutout.
Sophomore Meredith Ragan (Dallas, Texas) stopped nine shots for the Saxons, who were out-shot 34-9 on the day. The Ducks also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Stevens will be back in action on Tuesday as the Ducks close out a five-game homestand with a 7 p.m. game against Wilkes University. That contest will be carried live at www.Empire8.tv.
