HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 26, 2008) – Senior Brandon MacWhinnie scored a total of 16 team points off of a forfeit and two technical falls as the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team won its first two bouts in the Stevens Quadrangular against Muhlenberg College (24-18) and Ursinus College (21-18) on Saturday afternoon at the Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J.. However, the Ducks fell in the final dual to the 19th-ranked United States Merchant Marine Academy, 26-11.
Muhlenburg (2-6, 1-1 Centennial) was led by junior Matt Horn (Ringtown, Pa.) and senior Joe Tartar (Lehighton, Pa.). Horn got victories against freshman Justin Galati of the Ducks and freshman Justin Diesel (Minisink Valley, N.Y.) of the Mariners at 184 lbs. Tartar defeated Stevens sophomore James Roarty and Kings Point freshman Judd Connell (Hastings, Minn.) by scores of 3-2 and 9-3.
Ursinus (9-2, 2-2 Centennial), which entered competition with a record of 9-0, lost to USMMA and Stevens. The Bears were headed up by junior Chris Springer (New Egypt, N.J.), who pinned freshman Robert Bolomey of the Ducks at 2:18 in the 149-lb.competition. He also scored a 7-4 win over freshman Dan Twito (Cedar Falls, Iowa) of the Mariners. Junior Steve Kingsland (Drexel Hill, Pa.) beat USMMA freshman Jordan Alfaro (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Stevens sophomore Kyle Brisson.
Kings Point (9-4, 5-0 Centennial) went a perfect 3-0 against its competition. The Mariners received strong contributions from sophomore Eric Vincent (Trussville, Ala.) and freshman Vincent Renaut (Plymouth, Mass.). Vincent recorded a fall over Muhlenburg freshman Bill Sholly (Souderton, Pa.), while Renaut majored freshman Bobby Bishop of the Ducks, 13-4.
Stevens (7-2, 4-1 Centennial) opened up the quad against the Mules. In the match, the Ducks picked up major decisions over three of their opponents. Junior Mark Bistis upended freshman Michael Slevin (Wayne, N.J.), 13-1, at 133 lbs. Ahead 4-0 after two periods, Bistis scored two takedowns and a three-point near fall in the third to secure the win.
Sophomore Charles Favia accumulated nine points in the first period to blow out freshman Keith Swanson (Hackettstown, N.J.), 13-3, at 157. Then, in the 165-lb. weight class, junior Jordan Chacon took out senior David Lavin (Larchmont, N.Y.), 10-2. MacWhinnie also got a forfeit at 174.
Against the Bears, Stevens was down 12-10 after five weight classes, but the Ducks won the next three matches to pull into the lead for good. At 174 lbs, Bishop defeated freshman Luke Benko (Westminster, Md.), 6-2. MacWhinnie followed with a technical fall (16-1) against freshman Nate Murren (Littlestown, Pa.) at 184. Galati also bumped up a weight to 197 and earned a 7-3 victory versus senior Harry Keyser (Norristown, Pa.).
MacWhinnie highlighted the USMMA contest with a technical fall over junior Nick Shephard (Marion, Ind.) at 4:52. Favia and Galati also earned 6-5 sudden victories against freshman Scott Lowe (Mentor, Ohio) and Diesel, respectively. As a team, Stevens got within five points (16-11) after the 184-lb. match but couldn't mount the upset.
The Ducks return to the mat on February 7 when they host 13th-ranked Lycoming College at Walker Gymnasium in their final regular-season home match. The dual is scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m.
