Wrestling Falls to 1-4 After Tough Loss at Hunter

NEW YORK, N.Y. (December 5, 2008) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team lost a 26-25 heartbreaker to Hunter College on Friday in New York, N.Y. Hunter clinched the match when senior Brian Scher (Levittown, N.Y.) pinned junior Ernie Guaimano at 3:34 in the 197-lb weight class to give the Hawks a seven-point lead going into the final bout. The loss drops the Ducks to 1-4 on the young season. Junior James Roarty earned a win by pin fall at 5:57 in the 285-lb. weight class for the Ducks.

Hunter got off to a fantastic start taking a 14-0 lead after a technical fall at 125 lbs., a pin fall at 133 lbs., and a decision at 141 lbs.

Junior Charles Favia ignited a spirited Stevens come back with a decision win at 149 lbs. over Vitaly Simkin (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Junior Leo Dormann pulled the Ducks within seven (14-7) with a major decision over Matt Cartscuielo (Staten Island, N.Y.) in the 157-lb. weight class.

Rookie Joe Favia brought the score to 14-13 with a win by forfeit, and senior Jordan Chacon gave the Ducks a 19-14 lead with a pin-fall win at 174 lbs.

Joey Scott (Walden, N.Y.) gave Hunter the lead for good with a pin-fall win over sophomore Vincent Termini  at 184 lbs., and Scher earned the fall at 197 to seal the victory.

The Ducks battled throughout and put forth a valiant effort in the comeback but fell short once again. They will return to the mat after a long break on December 29 at the Florida Citrus Tournament in Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla.
