SWARTHMORE, Pa. (August 31, 2008) – Senior back Salme Cook tallied three points on a goal and an assist as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team defeated Farmingdale State College 3-0 on the final day of the of the 13th annual Swarthmore Swat Kick Classic. With the win the Ducks improve to 1-1 on the year as the Rams fall to 0-2.
After 39 minutes of scoreless action, freshman midfielder Heather Goldberg recorded her first collegiate point as a Duck. Senior midfielder Audra Clark was credited with the assist as she flick passed it to Goldberg, who sent it through the lower right side.
The Ducks extended their lead to 2-0 seven minutes into the second half after Cook sent a through ball to the out-stretched leg of junior back Kate Stewart, who was able to fire it into the lower right corner of the net.
During the 77th minute, Cook capped the scoring as she notched her second goal of the season when she weaved through a pair of defenders and blasted the ball through the right panel.
The Ducks dominated on both sides of the field as they out shot the Rams 28-3 and out-cornered Farmingdale 4-1. In goal for Stevens was sophomore Jenn Pontier and freshman Julie Wilkerson. Pontier controlled the first half and was credited with the win as Wilkerson had a fine showing during the final 45 minutes of play. For the Rams, Amanda Maass allowed three goals and recorded 11 saves.
Stevens will return to action when it hosts the fifth annual Stevens Engineering Cup on September 6-7. The Ducks face Middlebury College on Saturday at noon in Hoboken, N.J. They are then scheduled to play Ursinus College on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
