HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 17, 2009) – Junior 285-pounder James Roarty earned a tough 3-2 decision over junior Christopher Rash (Freehold, N.J.) to give the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team a thrilling 25-23 victory over King's College in the first of three matches at Walker Gymnasium in Hoboken, N.J. on Saturday. No. 3 Delaware Valley College defeated King's in the day's second match and beat the Ducks 47-3 in the third and final dual. Stevens is now 6-6 on the year heading into a conference quad next weekend in Hoboken.

Stevens 25, King's 23
King's got the day's first points at 125 pounds as freshman Michael Tabasco (Howell, N.J.) earned a technical fall win over junior Frank Maselli, but senior captain Mark Bistis came back to pin Anthony Dietrick (West Orange, N.J.) at 2:40 of the first period to give the Ducks a 6-5 lead. At 141 lbs., senior Pat Conrad took a disqualification and one team point was deducted from the Ducks. The DQ also netted King's six points for a seven-point swing in the favor of King's (7-9).

In the 149-lb. weight class, junior Frankie Davis (Madison, N.J.) earned a 3-2 decision over junior Tony Mancini to open a 14-5 King's lead but the Ducks were able to fight themselves right back into the match.

Junior 157-pounder Leo Dormann pinned Taylor Green (Montgomery, Md.) late in the third period to bring the Ducks within three, and freshman Joe Favia earned a technical fall victory at 165 pounds to give Stevens a 16-14 lead with four matches remaining. Freshman Ryan Dormann was able to extend the Duck lead to 22-14 when he earned a win by fall at 174 lbs.

One of the most entertaining matches of the day came in the 184-lb. weight class. Stevens senior Jordan Chacon fell in an absolute war with Zach Wilkinson (White Haven, Pa.), 8-5.

Zach Martinez (Hanover Township, Pa.) pinned junior Ernie Guaimano at 197 to help King's regain the lead at 23-22, but Roarty had the answer for the Ducks at 285 lbs. The junior won a battle with Rash to give the Ducks the tight win.

There were five lead changes over the course of the ten matches and it was no surprise that the outcome came down to the final bout.

No. 3 Delaware Valley 49, Stevens 3
The second match of the day was a tough one for the Ducks as the third-ranked team in the country proved to be too much. Delaware Valley (13-1-1) started the match with four-straight wins by pin fall to open a 24-0 lead.

Leo Dormann got the Ducks on the board with a decision at 157 lbs. over Don Smith (Amber, Pa.), and Favia took a tough loss at 165 to Justin Barowski (Point Pleasant, N.J.), 3-1. Ryan Dormann also lost a close decision to Rocky Mantella (Newtown, Pa.) at 174 lbs., and the Aggies won the last three matches of the day by fall or technical fall.

The Ducks return to action on Saturday, January 17 when they host a Centennial Conference quad in Canavan Arena. The first match is set to begin at 12 p.m.
