GLASSBORO, N.J. (January 17, 2009) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's swimming team notched its third dual-meet win of the season with a 123-82 victory at Rowan University on Saturday afternoon in Glassboro, N.J. The Ducks placed first in both relays as Stevens won seven events on the afternoon. Freshman Sian Pearson placed first three times to lead the Ducks who will return to competitive action on Monday when they host SUNY New Paltz.
Stevens (3-1) started off well by taking first in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of juniors Gabrielle Czernik and Stephanie Miller, senior captain Emily Woo, and freshman Cailin Grunewald touched at 4:14.21, more than six seconds better than the second-place team.
Pearson won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.25 and sophomore Sarah Parker was third. Sophomore Laura Barito, freshman Hayley Hatfield, and freshman Deanna Carrazza took one, two, three in the 50-free, and Woo was second with a 2:17.81 in the 200-yard individual medley event.
Pearson and fellow rookie Toni Diaz were one and two in the 200-yard butterfly with times of 2:13.70 and 2:16.50, respectively. Barito, Hatfield, and Grunewald took the three top spots in the 100-free as sophomore Mary Chew was second in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing in 2:17.82. Czernik was third in the same event with a 2:20.25. Pearson also took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:13.17, sophomore Amanda Nauman took third. Woo was third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:36.14.
Stevens finished the meet with a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Barito, Hatfield, Parker, and Carazza combined to turn in a 3:47.81.
Monday's New Paltz meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the De Baun Aquatic Complex.
