UTICA, N.Y. (October 17, 2009) – Sophomore Kathleen Schuckers netted her sixth goal of the season and added two assists to help the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Empire 8 rival Utica College. The Ducks, now 4-11-0 on the season, have evened their league ledger at 3-3-0, while Utica falls to 4-9-0 on the year and 2-4-0 in conference action.

Freshman Gia Gonzales opened up scoring in the sixth minute, netting her third marker of the season on a breakaway at 5:19 off a lead pass from Schuckers. Gonzales' goal marked the third straight game in which the Ducks netted the go-ahead tally within the opening minutes of action.

Utica would battle back however, tying the game at 20:04 on sophomore midfielder Jill Benoit's (Liverpool, N.Y.) equalizer off a cross from Chelsea Way (Cuyler, N.Y.). Undeterred, Schuckers, who finished the game with a team-high six shots, would help the Ducks regain the lead at the 29:39 mark, deflecting a Gonzales cross into the lower left side of the net for her sixth marker of the season.

Trailing 2-1 entering the second half, the Pioneers continued to push forward, recording the half's first two shots on goal in hopes of tying the match, but Stevens junior Mary Chew tipped a Schuckers cross into the left corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season, giving Stevens a two-goal advantage just shy of the 69th minute.

Utica, which was outshot, 18-12, would place three of its four shots on net down the stretch, but Stevens sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin McClymont, who finished with six saves, made three consecutive saves to preserve the Ducks lead en route to her third win of the season.

The Ducks return to action on Saturday, October 24 when they play host to league rival Hartwick College at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J.
