Wrestling Goes 2-1 In Three Centennial Conference Duals

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (January 30, 2011) – Senior Leo Dormann and sophomore Ryan Dormann each went undefeated on the afternoon as the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team went 2-1 in three Centennial Conference dual matches hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. The Ducks began the day with a 27-18 victory over Ursinus College before notching a decisive 48-6 win over Muhlenberg College. Stevens closed out the day with a close 25-21 loss to the No. 11 Mariners, falling to 4-1 in league play this season.

Ling got Stevens off to a fast start, pinning LauraLee Lightwood-Mater just 1:12 into their 125-lb. bout before Boehm staked Stevens to a 9-0 advantage with a 7-4 decision over Alex Blank. Bridge then scored a major decision over Elisha Gaylor at 141, making it 13-0 Ducks, before McCormick put the Bears on the board with a close 3-2 decision over Caserta.

Leo Dormann responded by pinning Matthew Generotti, 32 seconds into the second period of their 157-lb. matchup, before Sharkey scored a 13-2 major decision over William Reick. Ryan Dormann continued his dominance at 174 with an 8-0 major decision over Mike Kevlin before consecutive Ursinus decisions at 184 and 197 made the score 27-9. The Bears closed out the match with a forfeit win in the heavyweight class.

Ling and Boehm notched a pair of forfeit victories at 125 and 133 as Stevens took an early 12-0 advantage. Bridge then pinned Matthew Parker 1:53 into their matchup at 141-lbs. before Caserta pinned Kevin Horman in the third period of their 149-lb. bout.

Leo Dormann then kept things rolling with a 10-3 decision over Keith Swanson before Sharkey and Holden tallied forfeit wins at 165 and 174. Nowakoski then defeated William Sholly IV at 184 to make it 42-0 Stevens before a Ryan Dormann forfeit win at 197 closed out Stevens scoring.

In the feature match of the day, the Mariners got on the board early as returning All-American senior Jordan Alfaro (Fayetteville, N.C.) upended Ducks' freshman Brandon Ling in their 125-lb. bout, putting USMMA up 6-0. 

Stevens responded with a strong run, as freshman Andrew Boehm pinned Preston Graham (Jamestown, N.C.) before Ducks' All-American 141-pounder Ryan Bridge scored a decision over USMMA national qualifier James Beshada (South River, N.J.) to put the Ducks on top 9-6.

At 149, freshman CJ Caserta kept Stevens rolling with a big pin over junior Martin Bell (Eaton Rapids, Mich.) before Ducks senior co-captain Leo Dormann earned an exciting victory over USMMA senior Dan Twito (Cedar Falls, Iowa) - last year's Centennial Conference champion and NCAA Qualifier.

Hoping to stage a comeback, USMMA picked up points as senior national champion Vincent Renaut (Plymouth, Mass.) won by tech fall over Ducks' sophomore Will Sharkey to bring the Mariners to within 18-11.

Stevens sophomore Ryan Dormann then extended his win streak at 174-lbs. as he beat seventh ranked Justin Diesel (Minisink Valley, N.Y.) for the second time this season to up the Ducks lead to 21-11.

The Mariners answered by finishing the dual with a pair of wins at 184 and 197-lbs. before overcoming the deficit by earning a forfeit at heavyweight, squeaking past Stevens 25-21.
