Women's Fencing Defeats All DIII Rivals at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (November 13, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team went 7-1 on Sunday at the Vassar Invitational as the Ducks swept through traditional Division III strongholds including Tufts University, Haverford College and the host Brewers in their first dual-meet action of the year. The Ducks' lone loss came to Division I Sacred Heart University.

Stevens also registered wins over Fairleigh Dickinson University, Yeshiva College, Wellesley College and the City College of New York.

Leading the team individually was sophomore Briana Nieradka (West Windsor, N.J.), with an 18-4 record at epee. Also not far behind at epee was Sienna Batzli (Maplewood, N.J.), who was 17-5 on the day.

Junior Juliet Turalski (Maplewood, N.J.) went 18-5 at sabre, and senior Krista Sticco (Leonia, N.J.) was solid at 13-10.

At foil, freshman Taia Harrison (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) went 15-7 to lead that squad, while Alexis Clyburn (Hillside, N.J.) and Ann Destefano (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.) came in with 12 wins apiece.

Stevens will fence again at the NIWFA Christmas Invitational on December 4 in nearby Jersey City.
