HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 20, 2011) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team finished as the runner-up in the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference for the second year in a row, posting a 5-1 record Sunday at the EWFC Team Championship on Sunday at home in Canavan Arena. The epee squad, led by senior captain Meagan Ritter's 16-2 record, went undefeated to claim the conference crown in that weapon.
Ritter was complimented by sophomore Krystal Perkins, who went 12-2, as well as senior Stephanie Spelman and freshman Sienna Batzli, who each had only one loss against nine and seven victories, respectively. The squad's closest match was 6-3, and they blanked both Haverford College and Drew University by scores of 9-0.
Ritter finished the regular season with 60 wins, breaking her own previous record of 58, and moving to number two on the Stevens all-time epee victory list. In addition, Perkins had the second-best epee campaign in school history, posting 59 wins of her own this year. Perkins also reached the career 100-win plateau for the Ducks on Sunday.
Moving to foil, with her 10 victories on Sunday, junior Alexis Clyburn also set a new Stevens weapon record for wins in a season at 52. Junior Alexandra Lyons had a nice day at foil as well, posting a 10-5 record at the Championships.
The sabre squad was led by sophomore Juliet Turalski, who had a 14-3 ledger. Junior Krista Sticco was right on her heels with a 13-5 mark on the day, and sophomore Chelsea Shupe chipped in with a solid 4-1 record.
The Ducks will wrap up their homestand next weekend at the EWFC Individual Championships on February 27. Those matches are currently scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in Canavan Arena.
