Sharkey's Two Pins Highlights Tri-Match Sweep for Wrestling

WESTMINSTER, Md. (January 21, 2012) – In a Centennial Conference tri-match for the nationally-ranked No. 26 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md., the Ducks came away with a 30-15 win over the Green Terror and topped Washington & Lee University, 44-9. With the two victories, Stevens improves its record to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial.

In the 44-9 triumph over the Generals, freshman Anthony Gieger (South Amboy, N.J.) staked the Ducks to a 6-0 lead with a forfeit victory at 125 lbs.

After Washington & Lee picked up three points at 133, Stevens posted 10 points in the next two bouts with a major decision win by freshman Conner Bass (Westhampton, N.Y.) and a pin by sophomore CJ Caserta (Mt. Arlington, N.J.). Bass topped Matt Howell, 16-3, while Caserta took down H.T. Kotchinian in 2:20 to give the Ducks a 16-3 lead.

At 165, junior Joey Favia (Brick, N.J.) earned four points with a 17-5 major decision over Dan Igel. Fellow junior Ryan Dormann (Mickleton, N.J.) finished his bout at 174 with Zan Reed in 4:14 by way of a pin.

The Westminster, Md. native, junior Will Sharkey tallied the third fall victory of the match for the Ducks at 184, taking care of Morgan Moskal in 3:22. In the final two bouts at 197 and 285, freshman Chris Florek (Mendham, N.J.) and junior Brian Schmalz (Colts Neck, N.J.) both won by forfeit.

Head Coach Mike Clayton was pleased with the team's overall performance stating, "All our guys wrestled well today and the training we have put in over the past few weeks is really showing on the mats."

Against the Green Terror, the Ducks spotted McDaniel three points after 125, but rolled off 10 of their own in the next three showdowns and never relinquished the lead.

Boehm and Bass both won by decision, 10-6 and 7-4, respectively. Boehm defeated Sean Ensign, and Bass prevailed over Mason Goretsas.

Caserta picked up his second win on the day with an 11-2 major decision over Logan Yox, while Favia topped Sean McGarry, 3-0, for his second decision win.

With his second pin of the day, Dormann ended his match with Torin Lehman at the 2:45 mark. Also with two fall victories to his credit, Sharkey defeated Scott Forrester in 4:30.

The last win of the day for the Ducks came from sophomore Alex Moreno (Tenafly, N.J.) at 197. Moreno picked up the only technical fall victory of the afternoon, reaching the 15-point advantage over Esteban Marquez-Monsanto at 5:17.

On January 27, Stevens will travel to Doylestown, Pa. to take on the No. 20 Delaware Valley College Aggies at 7 p.m. The Ducks have seven more away matches before returning to Castle Point on February 15 against United States Merchant Marine Academy at 7:30 p.m.
