COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. (January 28, 2012) – On Saturday afternoon, January 28, the nationally ranked No. 29 Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team split its Centennial Conference duals with Muhleberg College and Ursinus in Collegeville, Pa. The Ducks defeated Muhlenberg, 42-12, but fell to the Bears, 27-10, to push their record to 10-5 overall and 4-1 in the Centennial.
In the 42-12 triumph over the Mules, only four bouts took place due to six forfeits by Muhlenberg. Stevens won two of the four bouts in the 141 and 149-lb. classes.
Freshman Conner Bass (Westhampton, N.Y.) recorded an 8-7 decision over Matthew Parker at 141, while sophomore CJ Caserta (Mt. Arlington, N.J.) came out on top against Kevin Homan by decision, 5-2.
The Ducks that picked up forfeit victories in the match were freshman Anthony Geiger (South Amboy, N.J.), sophomore Andrew Boehm (Granville, Ohio), freshman Jake Odell (South Windsor, Conn.), junior Joey Favia (Brick, N.J.), junior Ryan Dormann (Mickleton, N.J.) and sophomore Alex Moreno (Tenafly, N.J.).
In the setback to the Bears, freshman Mike Polizzi (Montville, N.J.) earned the first points for Stevens at 141 with a 2-0 decision win over Elisha Gaylor.
Favia grappled with William Reick at 165 and won by major decision, 11-2. Normally a 174 wrestler, Dormann moved up a class to 184 and took down Dan Manganaro, 4-0, for the decision.
The Ducks are back on the mats this weekend, February 3, as they travel to No. 5 Ithaca College for a 7 p.m. start.
