CHICAGO, Ill. (February 5, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team wrapped up its successful trip to Chicago with three wins in the second half of the Northwestern University Invitational on Sunday. In the most exciting moment of the day, junior Krystal Perkins (Palmdale, Calif.) won the final bout of the Ducks' 14-13 win over the University of California, San Diego. Stevens also defeated Cleveland State University and Lawrence University.
The Ducks dropped matches to Duke University and Stanford University, though the 16-11 matchup with the Cardinal was closer than the final score suggests.
The epee squad continued to fence well, posting a 28-17 record on Sunday in the Second City. Sophomore Sienna Batzli (Maplewood, N.J.) was 10-4, Perkins was 9-5 and Briana Nieradka (West Windsor, N.J.) was a solid 7-7.
Sabre also posted a winning record, led by senior Krista Sticco (Leonia, N.J.) and junior Juliet Turalski (Maplewood, N.J.), who posted identical 9-6 records against a field that included an Olympic bronze medalist.
Saturday's heroine Alexis Clyburn (Hillside, N.J.) was able to sustain her momentum, earning at least one win over each of the five schools Stevens faced on Sunday.
The Ducks will next compete at the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Team Championship at Drew University in Madison, N.J. on February 12. The first bouts are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
