Men's Results
ITHACA, N.Y. (January 26, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's indoor track & field team finished the Empire 8 Conference Championships in second place in as many years at Ithaca College on Saturday. Stevens totaled 106 points, just 36 from overtaking Ithaca for the team's first-ever Empire 8 crown. Three individuals and one team came away with first place finishes in their respective events.
Highlighting the top performances for the Ducks was senior
Victor Servito (Teaneck, N.J.), who set a school record and finished first in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.43 seconds. Servito also took fifth in the high jump with a mark of 1.83 meters and ran a leg on the 4x400 relay team which placed second.
Fellow senior
Andrew Kraemer (Budd Lake, N.J.) led the way for three top Stevens finishers in the weight throw with a distance of 15.29 meters. Kraemer bested the field by nearly 1.30 meters. In second was freshman
Andrew Assile (Ramsey, N.J.) with a mark of 14.00 meters, and junior
Joel Oquendo (North Bergen, N.J.) placed third with a toss of 13.30 meters.
Oquendo took the runner-up spot in the shot put with a mark of 13.22 meters, while Assile placed fourth at 12.60 meters.
Junior
Michael Cahill (Clark, N.J.) established a new facility record at Ithaca in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:31.04 and placed first overall. Cahill topped the field of 20 by over 30 seconds.
In the distance medley relay, junior
Louis Stengel (Vernon, N.J.), sophomore
Zach Andrews (Fairport, N.Y.), sophomore
Brian Lawrey Jr. (Andover, N.J.) and freshman
Troy Kanaszka (Metuchen, N.J.) prevailed with a time of 10:57.19.
Sophomore
Robert Pinto (Staten Island, N.J.) set a new Empire 8 and school record with a leap of 2.03 meters in the high jump to finish second overall. Pinto's mark is also the eighth best performance in the country.
The team of Servito, Andrews, and freshmen
Shane Chiravalle (Danbury, Conn.) and
Tom Halleran (Oakland, N.J.) took second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:30.76.
Chiravalle took third in the 400-meter race with a time of 52.09 seconds and placed fifth in the 60 hurdles at 8.76 seconds, while Stengel took fourth in the 800 in a time of 2:02.15.
Stevens will return to action on February 2 and East Stroudsburg University at 11 a.m.
As a recap, three individuals and one relay team were crowned Empire 8 Champions. Servito for the 60-meter hurdles, Kraemer in the weight throw, Cahill in the 5K and the team of Stengel, Andrews, Lawrey Jr. and Kanaszka in the distance medley relay. Two school records were set at the meet in the 60 hurdles and the high jump, which was a co-Empire 8 record as well for Pinto.
