Nazareth Shuts Outs Women’s Soccer, 2-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (October 12, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team was shut out for the first time in this season in a 2-0 defeat to Empire 8 Conference rival Nazareth College on Saturday, October 12, in Rochester, N.Y. With the loss, Stevens is now 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the Empire 8.

Nazareth (7-3-2, 3-0-0) netted two first half goals and held Stevens to just two second half shots (four in the match) to complete the shutout. The Golden Flyers dominated the shot category, taking 28 in the contest and put 12 on goal.

Sophomore Evelyn Ting (Gaithersburg, Md.) stopped 10 of the 12 shots from Nazareth but took the loss in all 90 minutes in goal for the Ducks.

The Golden Flyers notched their first goal in the 29th minute from Olivia Derleth, who scored both tallies, on an unassisted marker. Just over six minutes later, Derleth picked up her fifth goal of the season to add pad Nazareth's lead off a pass from Kaitlyn Sowyrda.

In the second half, seniors Bridgette Barden (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Lauren Hammerle (Sayville, N.Y.) put shots on goal but both were turned away by Abbie Carey. Carey made three saves in the contest to record the win.

Stevens plays at St. John Fisher College tomorrow at 1 p.m. and will then return home to take on Alfred University on the 19th at 1 p.m. for Alumnae Day.
