PITTSFORD, N.Y. (October 13, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team prevailed over St. John Fisher College, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in Pittsford, N.Y. in an Empire 8 Conference matchup. With the victory, Stevens is now 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while Fisher drops to 7-8, 2-1.
Both teams played to a scoreless outcome after 45 minutes of play and Fisher had the first couple opportunities to take an early edge within the first six minutes of regulation. Sophomore
Evelyn Ting (Gaithersburg, Md.) made two of her eight saves on the afternoon just 20 seconds apart in the sixth minute.
The Ducks would put their first shot on goal in the waning seconds of the half on a strike by senior
Becky Wos (Mukwonago, Wis.) that was turned away by Cardinals' goalkeeper Brooke Seavitt. Seavitt made seven saves for Fisher.
As the second half got underway, Stevens jumped ahead, 1-0, on the first goal of the season from senior
Caitlyn Labonte (Northbridge, Mass.) in the 48th minute on an unassisted score. Just over five minutes later, senior
Bridgette Barden (Redondo Beach, Calif.) staked the Ducks to a 2-0 lead on her fourth marker of the season which was the eventual game-winning tally of the contest.
Fisher closed the two-goal gap to one score in the 66th minute on the first goal of the year from Carly Finn. The Cardinals took five more shots the rest of the contest but three were turned away by Ting and two others were off the mark.
At the conclusion of the match, Fisher head a slim advantage in shots, 15-12, while Stevens took two corner kicks to just one for the Cardinals.
The Ducks will return to the pitch on October 19 at home against Alfred University at 1 p.m. for Alumnae Day. Next Saturday's contest in an Empire 8 showdown and one of three remaining conferences matches left of the slate. Stevens is currently third in the conference and trails Ithaca College and Nazareth College, who are both 4-0 in the E8.
