HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 5, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team was picked to finish fourth in the Centennial Conference Preseason Poll released recently.
Ursinus College was the coaches' pick to finish first with six first-place votes and 60 points. New York University and Johns Hopkins finshed tied for second with 54 points, with the Ducks taking fourth with 42 points. The United States Merchant Marine Academy was fifth, McDaniel College was sixth, Gettysburg College was seventh, Washington and Lee took eighth and Muhlenberg was ninth.
Last year, NYU was 6-0 in duals as was Ursinus. Hopkins was 6-2 with the Ducks finishing 5-3. Ursinus won the conference title, Hopkins was second and McDaniel placed third. Stevens finished sixth at the Centennial Conference Championships, resting several key contributors in order to go into the NCAA East Regional healthy and 100 percent.
The Ducks opened their 2013-14 season Saturday in Chicago, Ill. Stevens fell to the 20th-ranked Division I team in the nation in Northwestern University but downed the University of Chicago, 22-9. The Ducks won 7of-10 bouts against UC, with junior 149-pounder earning the only major-decision victory of the day.
Stevens (1-1) will visit the United States Military Academy, better known as Army (1-0), Wednesday night at 6 p.m. Army is coming off a 34-4 win over Franklin & Marshall November 2 in its season-opener. The Black Knights will be the second NCAA Division I team the Ducks will have wrestled in 2013. Stevens will head up to Binghamton, N.Y. for the Binghamton Open against some top competition Sunday as well.
