Women’s Soccer Ends Season with 3-1 Loss to Nazareth

ITHACA, N.Y. (November 9, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team lost in the Empire 8 Conference Semifinals to Nazareth College, 3-1, on the campus of Ithaca College on Saturday afternoon. Stevens (10-9) went into the tournament as the No. 3 seed, while Nazareth was No. 2 and finished the match with an 11-6-2 record.

It took nearly 39 minutes for either team to find the back of the net but the Golden Flyers struck first on a goal by Briana Vibbard. The tally was Vibbard's third of the season and assisted by Elisa Marchione.

The scored remained 1-0 for the final six minutes of the half and through the first 16 minutes of the second stanza before Stevens freshman Raba Nassif (Northvale, N.J.) knotted the contest at 1-1 on her fifth marker of the year (61:11).

Not even a minute later (62:06), Nazareth picked up the game-winner from Kaitlyn Sowyrda off a pass by Elizabeth Howell. The Golden Flyers added an insurance goal in the 71st minute of the ninth goal of the 2013 campaign for Olivia Derleth. Vibbard closed out the match with an assist for three points on the afternoon.

Stevens was unable to take a shot after Nazareth regained the lead at 2-1 and posted its third score. The Ducks did, however, fired off seven shots over the final 20 minutes and two were saved.

In goal for the Ducks, sophomore Evelyn Ting (Gaithersburg, Md.), stopped nine shots in 90 minutes of play in a losing effort.

Stevens was outshot, 21-13, and faced seven corners from the Golden Flyers, while the Ducks took three.

Nazareth will play nationally ranked No. 7 Ithaca for the Empire 8 crown tomorrow at 12 p.m. The Bombers defeated St. John Fisher College, 6-2, in the other semifinal today.
