Cahill Highlights Successful NYU Fastrack Challenge for Men’s Indoor Track & Field

NEW YORK CITY (February 15, 2013)
– Junior Michael Cahill (Clark, N.J.) of the Stevens Institute of Technology men's indoor track & field team broke his own school record in the 3,000-meter race by 16 seconds at the NYU Fastrack Challenge on Friday. Cahill posted a time of 8:42.91, improving on his old program record of 8:58.12.

Cahill also qualified for the upcoming ECAC Championships on March 1 and 2 with his fourth place finish. Before this season, no Stevens runner had ever posted a time better than 9:04.02.

The team of freshmen Zach Andrews (Fairport, N.Y.), Tom Halleran (Oakland, N.J.) and Shane Chiaravalle (Danbury, Conn.), and senior Victor Servito (Teaneck, N.J.) competed in the 4x400-meter relay event and came in fourth. The foursome crossed the line in a school-record-time of 3:26.15.

Servito also took part in the high jump and placed fifth overall with a cleared height of 1.90 meters.

Sophomore Kristopher Alvarez (Hainesport, N.J.) met an ECAC qualifying standard in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.64 seconds. Alvarez also ran a personal best time in the event.

Senior Andrew Kraemer (Budd Lake, N.J.) recorded a third place finish for the Ducks in the weight throw with a distance of 15.08 meters, while freshman Andrew Assile (Ramsey, N.J.) came in fifth with a mark of 14.08 meters in the same event. Assile also placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 11.75 meters.

Junior Louis Stengel (Vernon, N.J.) was another fifth-place finisher for Stevens in the 1,000 with a time of 2:37.04 and also ran a leg on the 4x800 relay team. Stengel was joined by sophomore Matthew Bombard (Wayne, N.J.), freshman Troy Kanaszka (Metuchen, N.J.) and sophomore Brian Lawrey Jr. (Andover, N.J.) who combined to run 8:25.36 for fifth overall.

Sophomore Robert Pinto (Staten Island, N.Y.) registered sixth and seventh place finishes in the high jump and long jump events. Pinto cleared the bar at 1.85 meters in the high jump and leaped a distance of 6.43 meters in the long jump.

The Ducks compete again at the ECAC Championships before the indoor season wraps up at the NCAA Championships on March 8 and 9.
