NEW YORK CITY (February 17, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling squad traveled to Hunter College on Saturday for its final regular season matches before the Centennial Conference Championships on February 23 in Baltimore. Stevens fell to Hunter, 21-14, and was tripped up by Johnson & Wales University, 28-10.

In the 28-10 setback to Johnson & Wales, sophomore Anthony Geiger (South Amboy, N.J.) put the Ducks ahead with a four-point major decision win, 13-0, over Joe Pronk in the opening bout of the match at 125-lbs.

The Wildcats won the next two weight classes to take a slim 7-4 lead before senior Ryan Owens (Fallston, Md.) knotted the match up with a 3-1 decision win against Dan Franco at 149.

At 157, JWU jumped back to a three-point lead before senior Joey Favia (Brick, N.J.) once again deadlocked the match in the 165-lb. division with another decision triumph. Favia defeated Sean Prell by a score of 9-4 for the final victory for Stevens in the match.

JWU broke the match open with a pin at 184 and a forfeit at 197 to claim the victory.

Against Hunter, freshman Ryan Wilson (McVeytown, Pa.) picked up the first three points for Stevens at 133 with a 6-4 decision over Kenneth Albert. The Hawks took 141, before Owens claimed 149 with a 4-1 win against Brady Kwong.

Another decision victory for Hunter at 157 gave the Hawks a 9-6 lead heading into 165, but Favia controled the entire bout with a 22-7 technical fall over Nick Wilkie.

With an 11-9 advtange, the Ducks tallied three more points at 174, as sophomore Zach Bass (Westhampton, N.Y.) slipped past Luke Pragdat, 5-2.

The Ducks could not claim a victory in the final three bouts and trailed by just one point with the heavyweight matchup to come. Hunter earned a fall victory to finish off the dual with a 21-14 win.
