Women’s Soccer Drops 5-1 Decision to RPI in 2013 Opener

EWING, N.J. (August 30, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team opened up its 2013 campaign at The College of New Jersey Classic and fell to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 5-1, on Friday afternoon in Ewing, N.J. Stevens heads back to TCNJ tomorrow for a 2 p.m. showdown against No. 13 William Smith College to conclude the opening weekend of the season.

Within the first 19 minutes of the opening half, RPI (1-0) took a 2-0 advantage over the Ducks (0-1). Stevens cut the deficit to one goal on the first career score by freshman Gabby Mathelier (Pomona, N.Y.) in the 36th minute on an unassisted strike from the left side of the box.

RPI capitalized on its chances in the first half by putting four of its six shots on net, two of which beat sophomore goalkeeper Evelyn Ting (Gaithersburg, Md.). Ting finished the contest with four saves in all 90 minutes of action.

The Ducks were in the position to knot the match up at 2-2 as the second half got underway but the Engineers posted three quick goals to put the contest out of reach. RPI's third tally came at the 52:52 mark, and just under three minutes later, the fourth goal of the afternoon was posted.

Taylor Korytko registered her second goal of the game and final score of the showdown in the 67th minute to cap off the offensive output for RPI. Steph Vargas played 75 minutes in goal for the Engineers for her first win of the season.

RPI outshot Stevens, 17-10, and held a slight edge in corner kicks, 7-5. Both teams were award four tries from the corner flag in the first half.
