HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 18, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Farmingdale State College at the De Baun Athletic Complex on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, Stevens is now 2-4 on the season, while Farmingdale State improves to 4-3.

Stevens had an early opportunity to tally the first goal of the match off a corner kick from junior Mariah Cleveland (Los Gatos, Calif.). Cleveland set up her service into the box with a bending shot which hooked all the way to the goal line but was cleared away by a Farmingdale defender in the 10th minute.

The Ducks would strike first in the match on a free kick from freshman Gabby Mathelier (Pomona, N.Y.) from 23 yards out in the 38th minute. Mathelier's blast deflected off the left post and into net to beat a sprawling Ashley Monzillo.

Farmingdale State answered back with over two minutes left in the first half to knot the game up at 1-1 on a through ball from Alexis Caracappa that led Ashlee Thompson past the Ducks' defense.

Sophomore Leah Spaulding (San Pedro, Calif.) played the first half for Stevens but did not make a save before being replaced by Evelyn Ting (Gaithersburg, Md.). Ting suffered the loss and made one save.

The Rams put the contest away in the 85th minute on a deep shot from the right corner of the 18-yard box by Sam Johrden that bounced off the left post and into the net.

Stevens held a slim, 11-10, edge in shots but Farmingdale was awarded four corners to just two for the Ducks.

Up next for Stevens will be the Empire 8 Conference opener against Houghton College on September 21 at 3 p.m. in Hoboken.
