HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 4, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team improved to 2-2 in the Empire 8 (5-7 overall) with a 7-1 win over Hartwick College in a heavy rain Saturday at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
The Ducks came out on fire, scoring twice just 6:52 into the action and 1:07 apart. The first tally came from freshman forward
Victoria Alvarez (Pine Beach, N.J.). On the play, the rookie deflected in a shot from junior captain
Erin Silvestri (Beverly, Mass.) after receiving a penalty-corner-insert from classmate
Dailyn Brook (Cherry Hill, N.J.). Both Brook and Silvestri were credited with assists on the play.
Alvarez also scored the second Stevens goal, this one on the back of a cross from sophomore
Nolie Prouty (Glendora, Calif.) with 28:08 to go in the opening period. The marker was the 11th of the year for the Duck freshman.
The lead moved to three goals exactly 24:00 minutes into the game when sophomore
Taylor Welch (Ringwood, N.J.) knocked in her sixth of the season. Welch was able to deflect in a shot from Silvestri after the junior received another insert from Brook. Once again, Brook and Silvestri earned assists on the play.
Stevens ended the first half with a 12-3 margin in shots and a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners, dominating field position and possession throughout the period.
The hosts' advantage quickly increased with Welch's second of the game after junior back
Angela Bauroth (Rockville, Md.) controlled the ball after a scrum and made a perfect pass to Welch off the right post.
The Ducks' fifth goal of the match came via a converted stroke by Brook, and senior forward
Jillian Fiebel (Roxbury, N.J.) tallied the next two. On her first, the veteran carried into the left side of the circle before sneaking her shot inside the left post. The second came thanks to a cross in front from Brook.
Alvarez, Welch and Fiebel all scored twice with Brook recording three assists and one goal on the day for a total of five points. Seven total players pocketed points as the Ducks finished the game with a 26-4 margin in shots and 17-2 edge in penalty corners.
Sophomore goalie
Emily Stukenborg (Stockholm, N.J.) earned the win in goal, making three saves in her 57-plus minutes in the cage.
The Ducks will look to make it two-in-a-row when they host New Paltz on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
