LIVE AUDIOHOBOKEN, N.J. (November 6, 2014) – Armed with the No. 3 seed, the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team opens play tomorrow in the Empire 8 Conference Championship with a semifinal match against No. 2 Nazareth College.
The two day tournament is set to take place in Ithaca, N.Y. with a start time of 1:30 p.m. for the Ducks.
CHAMPIONSHIP SCHEDULE No. 1 Ithaca College and No. 4 St. John Fisher College will kick things off at 11 a.m. Friday with the Ducks match to follow. Saturday's final will take place at 1 p.m.
DUCK VISION Led offensively by freshman
Raba Nassif, the Ducks (11-6, 6-2) have outscored opponents 35-19 this season to give them the fourth highest scoring offense in the conference.
Nassif leads the Ducks with 15 goals and 33 points and is supported offensively by senior
Ann Heine who's compiled six goals and 19 points. Defensively, Stevens is anchored by junior
Carly Bean, senior
Bella Romano, and freshman
Kaitlin Goncalves. Freshman
Lindsey Mahnken has been the Ducks main option in goal with 47 saves and five shutouts in 14 starts.
STEVENS VS. THE FIELD Semifinal opponent Nazareth defeated the Ducks on Oct. 18 1-0 in Hoboken after scoring a goal less than two minutes into the match. Stevens did however outshoot the Golden Flyers 13-5 including a 5-2 margin in shots on goal.
Against top-seeded Ithaca on Oct. 4, Stevens handed the Bombers their only conference loss of the season in a 1-0 win in which the Ducks outshot their opponent 19-8 and allowed just four shots on goal. Nassif scored the game winner in the 27
th minute with an unassisted goal from 20 yards out.
Stevens also picked up a win against fourth seeded St. John Fisher College with a 2-1 victory on Oct. 25. Nassif scored twice in the first half and Mahnken made three saves as the Ducks outshot the Cardinals 18-7.
KNOW THE EMPIRE Ithaca's Kelsey King is third in the conference in both goals (12) and points (29). Nazareth's Christine Belding and Briana Vibbard are tied for fourth with seven goals while Michaela Soules is fourth with 20 points. Fisher's Carly Finn is sixth with a .333 assist per game average.
Nassif leads all championship participants with 15 goals and 33 points.
CHAMPIONSHIP VETERANS The Ducks have made the conference championship field every season since joining the Empire 8 prior to the 2007 season. Stevens has won two championships in that time in 2010 and 2011, and is undefeated in conference championship finals games.
