ITHACA, N.Y. (November 7, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team was unable to avenge a regular season loss to Nazareth College Friday, as they saw their Empire 8 Conference championship run come to an end with a 2-0 loss.
The loss dropped Stevens' record to 11-7 while Nazareth moved to 14-3-2.
The third-seeded Ducks surrendered a pair of first-half goals to the second-seeded Golden Flyers' Christine Belding.
In the first, Belding tapped the ball in after a corner kick from Courtney Malia in the 10
th minute for the score. Later, in the 23
rd minute, Belding headed the ball past Stevens' freshman keeper
Lindsey Mahnken to extend the lead to two.
Coming out of the break, the Ducks controlled possession and unleashed one shot in the 58
th minute before three more in the 64
th. Sophomore
Raba Nassif's first went wide before the second hit off the post. Steven's two attempts at a rebound off Nassif's shot both failed to reach the back of the net after being first blocked before the second sailed high.
Stevens' best chance in the rest of the half came in the 76
th minute off the foot of junior
Carly Bean, but Nazareth keeper Allison Dobles made the save to preserve the shutout and the win.
Similar to the two teams' last meeting, Stevens outshot Nazareth, this time 15-14, but were unable to convert.
Mahnken notched seven saves on the day in a snowy afternoon at the tournament's host, Ithaca College.
The Ducks will now await their postseason fate with either an NCAA or ECAC Tournament appearance.
