NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 9, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team placed second at the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC) Team Championships Sunday.
The Ducks earned wins over Drew (24-3), CCNY (18-9), Yeshiva (24-3), Haverford (15-12) and host Hunter (21-6), but fell to eventual champion Johns Hopkins University, 16-11. Stevens is now 22-7 this season.
The Stevens epee squad won the EWFC weapon title behind strong performances from four different student-athletes. Senior
Briana Nieradka went 15-2 and junior
Sienna Batzli was 12-2. Sophomore
Deanna Quackenbush was 11-7, and reserve
Rebecca Merrick was 4-1 in limited action.
The sabre group was led by sophomore
Zoe To who went 12-5 and earned the 100th win of her career. Senior
Clara Luneke also had a solid day for Stevens, going 10-6.
In foil action, junior
Taia Harrison and sophomore
Caroleen Chen each were 14-3 in excellent work, and sophomore
Jane Cruz pocketed an overall mark of 10-7.
Each of the three weapons for Stevens had a winning record on the day with epee taking the team title. Hopkins won the foil title in addition to the overall team title, and Haverford was first in sabre as the Fords placed third overall.
Stevens will return to action when it hosts the EWFC Individual Championships in the Canavan Arena next Sunday.
