HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 27, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team capped off a perfect weekend with a sweep of Ramapo College and five-set win over the United States Coast Guard Academy in the Stevens Invitational on Saturday.
Stevens (14-3) hit .333 against Ramapo in the first match and held the Roadrunners to .037 in the opener and then put down 68 kills in the marathon five-set triumph over Coast Guard in its final match of the Invitational.
The 14-3 ledger by the Ducks mirrors their start from a season ago.
Stevens 3, Ramapo 0The Ducks made easy work of Ramapo, 25-12, 25-15, 25-12, and never trailed in the match. Stevens opened the contest with 12 kills and one error for a .393 clip and then hit .240 and .355, respectively, in sets two and three.
Freshman
Brianna Evans (Spokane, Wash.) led the way for Stevens with 10 kills on a .529 hitting percentage with eight digs, two blocks and two service aces. Sophomores
Christina Sciarra (Montclair, N.J.) and
Mary Tobin (Boothwyn, Pa.) each tallied seven kills in the win. Sciarra also added four aces and four digs, while Tobin chipped in seven digs with two blocks.
Senior
Ashley Castillo (Cresskill, N.J.) posted a match-high in assists with 32 to go along with five digs. Freshman
Sydni Horner (Columbia, Md.) dug out 17 attempts from the Roadrunners to lead all players in that category.
Junior
Annemarie Thomas (Durham, N.C.) swung at a .500 rate with five kills in 10 attempts and added two blocks, while senior
Katie Hall (Midlothian, Va.) added four blocks, three aces and three kills.
Fellow junior
Kristen Herchenroder (Breezy Point, N.Y.) and freshman
Mckenzie Kingsbury (San Diego, Calif.) each contributed two kills. Kingsbury was successful in both attempts.
Stevens held Ramapo to just 18 kills in the match and benefitted from 15 attack errors, as well as 11 receiving errors on aces from the Ducks.
Stevens 3, Coast Guard 2In the night cap, Stevens looked destined for another sweep after 25-10 and 25-16 wins in the first two sets, but the Bears responded with a 33-31 victory in the marathon third set and a 25-21 triumph in set four. The Ducks claimed the match with a 15-12 win in the final game.
Stevens came out strong with 16 kills in the first set and hit .481 overall but tailed off in the final four, never hitting above .250.
Tobin tied a school record with 33 points in the match on a career-high 29 kills, four total blocks and one ace. She stepped up in the third set after the Ducks trailed 20-12 and called a timeout. Out of the break, Stevens ran off nine straight points to take a 21-20 lead which was highlighted by five consecutive points from Tobin – three kills and two solo blocks.
After Stevens jumped ahead, 21-20, the set was tied 11 different times until the Bears notched the final two points. There were 13 deadlocks and seven lead changes in the set.
The Ducks never held advantage in the fourth set, but battled through the fifth, which was capped off by three consecutive kills from Tobin. The fifth set witnessed six ties and four lead changes.
Tobin also reached the elusive 20-20 match with 21 digs and hit .421.
Castillo narrowly missed out on her own school record with 61 helpers in the match to go along with 10 digs and four blocks.
Hall posted 15 kills and swung at a .444 rate with six aces, four digs and three blocks. She paced all players in aces and propelled Stevens to 16 in the match.
Horner registered a match-best 31 digs, while Evans added eight more kills to her day with eight digs and two aces.
Sciarra wrapped up her weekend with 13 kills and a pair of aces.
Stevens returns to action on October 1 at 7 p.m. for a single match against Baruch College in Hoboken.
