DANBURY, Conn. (October 27, 2015) – The No. 13 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team saw its 11-match unbeaten streak snapped Tuesday in a 3-1, non-conference road loss to Western Connecticut State University.
The loss dropped Stevens to 13-3-1, while West Conn. moved to 13-5-1.
Junior
Raba Nassif provided the Ducks scoring with a second-half goal, while senior
Kristen Goncalves tallied an assist. As a team, the Ducks outshot West Conn. 27-14, including a 14-10 margin in shots on goal.
After some initial offensive pressure from the Colonials in the opening six minutes, the Ducks responded with six unanswered shots over a 12 minute period. Nassif and sophomore
Gabby Mathelier closed the half with a pair of chances to continue the threats, however West Conn. made the save on both the keep the match deadlocked.
The Colonials finally broke through with a score in minute 60, followed by another five minutes later to put the Ducks in a 2-0 hole. A third goal in the 69th brought the deficit to three before the Ducks answered 19 minutes later with one of their own.
Off a feed from Goncalves, Nassif blasted the ball past West Conn's lunging keeper for the goal, cutting the lead to two with three minutes remaining. The goal was Nassif's 11th of the season, while the assist was Goncalves' eighth.
The hole proved to be too large for the Ducks however, as Western held Stevens shot-less over the final two minutes to seal the win.
The Ducks will conclude their regular season Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against Hartwick College in Hoboken, where they'll host the team's alumnae day.
