HOBOKEN, N.J. (NOVEMBER 7, 2015) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team claimed its first Empire 8 Conference championship since 2011 with a 2-1 win over Ithaca College Saturday.
The Ducks had a chance to open the score in the 14
th minute, as junior
Raba Nassif was hauled down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Nassif's attempt rang off the post however, and the Bombers were able to clear out.
Three minutes later, Komar was knocked down in the penalty area. Senior
Kristen Goncalves was able to convert this time for her 10
th of the year. In the 22
nd minute, Komar faked out a defender and blasted a rocket to the far post for her 18
th goal of the season.
Kelsey King had a chance to trim the deficit in half, but sophomore
Lindsey Mahnken was able to make the save. The Ducks had several other opportunities to add goals, but Beth Coppolecchia was solid in net, making eight first period saves.
King got the Bombers on the board in the 53
rd minute, as she converted a penalty kick. After the goal, Ithaca put the next four shots towards the Stevens net, but were unable to convert. The Bombers last chance came in the 84
th minute, but the attempt was blocked.
Nassif led the way with eight shots, including four on goal. Freshman
Olivia Butera recorded four shots and had an assist on the Komar goal.
Coppolecchia was stellar in goal for the Bombers, making 13 stops. King fired eight shots in the game, and tallied the lone goal.
